Personal auto policies specifically exclude business use. If a vehicle is used for work and causes an accident, the personal policy will deny the claim.

Coverage Types

Four types of commercial auto coverage.

Commercial auto coverage works very differently from personal insurance. Here is what each component protects and when it applies.

1

Commercial Liability Coverage

Pays for injuries and property damage your business vehicles cause to others. Commercial limits are far higher than personal auto because business vehicles carry greater exposure and larger claims.
Commercial Liability Coverage

2

Collision Coverage

Covers physical damage to your business vehicles after a collision. Required by most commercial lenders on financed vehicles. Protects your fleet investment regardless of who is at fault.
Collision Coverage

3

Comprehensive Coverage

Covers non-collision damage such as hail, theft, fire, flooding, and vandalism. Essential on the Gulf Coast where severe weather is frequent and can damage an entire fleet at once.

Comprehensive Coverage

4

Hired and Non-Owned Auto

Covers liability when employees drive personal or rented vehicles for business. If your team uses their own cars for deliveries or client visits, hired and non-owned auto closes the gap.

What Affects Your Rate

Why two fleets pay different commercial auto premiums.

Commercial auto rates depend on vehicle types, driver records, mileage, and industry. We find the carrier that prices your fleet most favorably.

Vehicle Type

Heavier vehicles carry more exposure and cost more to insure than standard passenger cars.

Driver Records

Commercial drivers with violations significantly increase fleet premiums. MVR screening controls this.

Driving Radius

Local Corpus Christi routes are rated differently than long-haul or multi-state commercial driving.

Common Questions

Commercial auto questions answered plainly.

No jargon. No pressure. Just straight answers about commercial auto insurance.

Usually yes. Personal auto policies exclude business use beyond commuting, so if you are hauling tools, making deliveries, driving to job sites, or the vehicle is titled to the business, a claim can be denied on a personal policy. We review how the vehicle is actually used and title before recommending anything.

It covers your business when employees drive rented vehicles or their own cars on company business. It does not cover the employee's vehicle itself, but it protects the business from liability that follows the work being done, which is where the large claims come from.

Only drivers who are properly listed and rated. We help you set driver eligibility criteria and review motor vehicle records, because an unlisted or excluded driver behind the wheel at the time of a loss is one of the most common coverage disputes we see.

It depends on what your contracts require and what you have to protect. Many commercial contracts and municipal jobs require a data-id="x2l010ab" data-element_type="column" data-e-type="column">

Not by the auto policy. Tools, materials, and equipment in transit are covered under inland marine or a contractors equipment policy. This gap surprises contractors every year, and it is a quick fix once you know about it.

Vehicle type and weight, radius of operation, what you haul, garaging address, driver records, and your loss history. Cleaning up driver records and correcting a misclassified radius or use code often moves the premium more than switching carriers.
